Safety Director
Department: Operations
Reports To: Operations Manager
Summary: Coordinates safety program in order to ensure a safe fleet while maintaining compliance with all Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations. Instructs truck and trailer drivers in matters pertaining to traffic and safety regulations and care of equipment by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
·Oversees fleet safety and compliance with Department of Transportation requirements.
·Instructs drivers regarding company regulations, penalties for infraction of rules, or safety and conservation measures.
·Rides with Driver Representatives to detect errors in handling cargo or driving vehicle.
·Patrols highway to detect violation of company regulations by drivers and to observe condition of vehicles and road.
·Participates actively in the selection process for hiring new Driver Representatives.
·Has the authority to take disciplinary measures necessary to ensure Driver compliance with safety regulations, including disciplinary action including termination of employment. Coordinates the implementation of such disciplinary measures with the Operations Manager and Fleet Planner/Dispatcher.
·Audits Driver logs to ensure compliance with DOT and Company safety requirements.
·Establishes an open channel of communication with Driver Representatives regarding safety and solves any problems they may have with safety-related issues. Keeps appropriate internal Team Members informed of any problems and the action taken to correct them.
·Works with Fleet Planner and Dispatchers to reroute trucks as a result of unsatisfactory safety conditions.
·Investigates accidents involving company trucks and independent contractors, questions witnesses and drivers to determine causes of accidents and makes adjustments in accordance with governmental regulatory agency and company procedures.
·Directs transfer of cargo from damaged truck to substitute vehicle to ensure scheduled delivery.
·Analyzes accident reports obtained from governmental agencies and safety fitness reports to determine driver's need for additional training.
·Confers with Operations Team Members concerning such problems as accident rates and abuse of equipment, and recommends measures to improve safety records and to conserve equipment.
·Purchases safety materials within spending guidelines and approves invoices for payment
·Assists with the maintenance of the Operations Manual.
·Assists with Customer complaints, as needed. Passes on Customer compliments, as appropriate.
·Works cooperatively with Operations Team Members to achieve company objectives.
·Stays current on new safety regulations, management techniques, products, and services.
·Strives for continuous improvement in company safety operations.
·Maintains a safe, clean, and orderly work place
·Performs other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES A dotted line accountability exists between this position and all Driver Representatives. Although technically Driver Representative report to the Operations Manager, the Safety director has full authority to reprimand and terminate any Driver Representative who violates safety rules.
QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. ·The Safety Director must have and be willing to maintain the knowledge necessary to stay abreast of current with safety practices as well as any changes in DOT requirements.
·Must be a team player, able to work successfully with interdependent teams
·Must be self-motivated, a 'self starter'
·Must be able to work successfully with the following software programs: Windows 95, TMW, PCMiler, MapLinks, Goldmine, MS Word, MS Excel, DAC, and Drug/Alcohol
·Must adamantly maintain the highest standards of excellence in safety.
·Must be able to present safety concerns tactfully yet firmly.
·Must be able to motivate others to achieve and maintain excellence.
·Must be able to teach, and in some cases re-train, others to ensure that D.O.T. changes, log compliance regulations, etc. are clearly understood.
·Must be willing to travel without notice (when a major accident involving fatalities, HazMat spill, etc. the Safety Director must go immediately to the accident site.)
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE A high school diploma with additional relevant formal education or equivalent experience is required. Driving experience is desirable.
LANGUAGE SKILLS Strong verbal communication skills and good written communication skills are required.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Average math skills are required.
REASONING ABILITY The Safety Director must have strong reasoning ability. He/she must be able to analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, select and implement the best alternative, and communicate the logic behind the decision to others.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Must hold a valid Class A Commercial Drivers License.
